چکیده

We give an algorithmic introduction to Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs) using a newly developed computational engine, LCS Tool. LCSs are most repelling, attracting and shearing material lines that form the centrepieces of observed tracer patterns in two-dimensional unsteady dynamical systems. LCS Tool implements the latest geodesic theory of LCSs for two-dimensional flows, uncovering key transport barriers in unsteady flow velocity data as explicit solutions of differential equations. LCS Tool makes theoretical results accessible to the fluid mechanics community since implementing these results directly could be time consuming. After a review of the underlying theory, we explain the steps and numerical methods used by LCS Tool, and illustrate its capabilities on three unsteady fluid flow examples. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Attraction-based Computation of Hyperbolic Lagrangian Coherent Structures

Recent advances enable the simultaneous computation of both attracting and repelling families of Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS) at the same initial or final time of interest. Obtaining LCS positions at intermediate times, however, has been problematic, because either the repelling or the attracting family is unstable with respect to numerical advection in a given time direction. Here we d...

Lagrangian Coherent Structure Analysis of Terminal Winds Detected by Lidar. Part II: Structure Evolution and Comparison with Flight Data

Using observational data from coherent Doppler light detection and ranging (lidar) systems situated at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), the authors extract Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) intersecting the flight path of landing aircraft. They study the time evolution of LCS and compare them with onboard wind shear and altitude data collected during airplane approaches. Their res...

A surface tracking fast algorithm for computing Lagrangian coherent structures in 3D unsteady flows

A surface tracking algorithm is developed for the computation and extraction of Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) in 3D unsteady flows. An advancing front algorithm is used to approximate the LCS surface with a mesh of triangles at each time step. Computations are performed only along the ridges in the finite time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE) field, which identify LCS. Initial results appear ver...

Time Line Cell Tracking for the Approximation of Lagrangian Coherent Structures with Subgrid Accuracy

Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs) have become a widespread and powerful method to describe dynamic motion patterns in time-dependent flow fields. The standard way to extract LCS is to compute height ridges in the finite-time Lyapunov exponent field. In this work, we present an alternative method to approximate Lagrangian features for 2D unsteady flow fields that achieve subgrid accuracy wit...
